The year-over-year strengthening of the U.S. dollar in November and December applied downward pressure on metal prices. The reason the currency has an impact on the three metals tracked by IAA is because they are denominated in U.S. dollars. So when the dollar gains value, metal prices generally fall because it takes fewer dollars to purchase the same amount of the desired metal. With regard to foreign buyers, a strengthening of the dollar means the metals become relatively more expensive for those customers, lowering demand and consequently the price.
In November and December 2014, average whole crushed auto-body prices extended year-over-year and month-over-month decreases. Supply surpluses along with decreased demand from foreign trading partners weighed on the value of scrap. However, extreme weather across the United States appeared to stabilize prices in December, as the ability to obtain scrap was more difficult.”

“The U.S. Dollar Index experienced strong growth over the two months. Strong domestic economic performances, as well as struggling Asian and European economies, made the greenback an appealing option for investors. Declining oil prices also weighed down economies that rely heavily on commodity exports, which put further upward pressure on the dollar.”
